RC and The Gritz

Good Morning Texas Performing “Love, Love, Love” – January 3, 2014

This show was really special to me. Sometime before, RC was bringing in a big name to headline his annual Thanksgiving Eve bash at The Door in Deep Ellum in Dallas. I had a connection at one of the morning shows on another TV station. I called her, texted RC, RC texted big name… Back and forth. Everybody wanted to do this thing, but logistics weren’t there. This dude had zero interest in flying into Dallas and getting up before sunup to do an interview, then do a show at ten that night. We all got it and decided to make it happen the next time he was in town.

Later in life I was on the patio of Sandaga 813 talking to RC one night and he said “We have a release date for the album, get in touch with your TV friend.” “Uh, well… That ship has sailed. I don’t believe we’ll be in contact with her again.” So I put out some feelers and connected with the Executive Producer from Good Morning Texas. Claudia Melton, Lead singer for The Gritz was a running buddy, so between us all, we threw this thing together. I wasn’t even going to the show. I had studied Television Production, worked in studios before and just wasn’t that interested. The night before, I was in a hotel bar in the Cedars for another singer’s birthday party. The crew there was telling me that I should go and support, so I did.

After the show, The Executive Producer introduced herself and thanked me for hooking her up with this awesome talent. I told her how much I appreciated her help redeeming myself and that if she needed any more musical guests, I had people at the ready. She said “I just got here from Atlanta, and you’re my new best friend.” A couple of weeks passed and she had an amusing request. “I need either Jimmy Buffet or a Reggae band.” It took me an hour and a half to book her Watusi, Dallas’ own premier Reggae outfit.

I did seventeen more shows with her after that, spanning five years. During all of that I was dealing with my parent’s declining health, their legal woes and so forth. It was a fun, crazy ride, but I finally bowed out when I had to quit my job to move my Mom into my house to care for her. Will I ever do it again? No. Probably not. Maybe. No. I love musicians and many are close friends. Upon deep reflection of why old Blues dudes call their brethren “Cats” leads me to believe that the term “Herding Cats” is somehow related. It was fun though…
